To read your mail from a Hall of Residence or from off-campus you will need
a mail program running on your PC that is capable of accessing an IMAP
server. Examples of such programs include latest versions of Mozilla Thunderbird,
Eudora and Pegasus. These are known as 'mail clients'.
To configure these programs, you will need to know your full-context Student
Service username (and password), the name of the incoming mail server and the
name of the outgoing mail server.
Full-context Username
Your full-context username is an extension of your normal
Student Service login ID. The form below will tell you what this is:
(Note that the full-context name uses 'qmw' not 'qmul')
Student IMAP Server Name
The name of the student mail server for IMAP access is: imap.stu.qmul.ac.uk
Outgoing (SMTP) Server Name
You will also see need to know the name of an SMTP server.
This is used for sending mail.
- If you are in a Hall of Residence or using the wireless network on campus,
you should set this to:
smtp.qmul.ac.uk
If your mail client is set up to use a third party SMTP server (i.e. a non-QM
one) you will need to set the SMTP port to either 587 or
465.
- If you are off campus and not in a hall, you should set the SMTP server
name to that of your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you have problems
using your ISP's SMTP server, you may be able to use the college server
by following these
instructions.
Configuring Popular Email Clients
Using your full-context username and the IMAP server name, you can now configure
your preferred mail client as detailed below:
Using POP Access
If your mail client is not capable of accessing an IMAP server or if you just
prefer to do so, you can use the older POP method to read your mail. The basic
difference between the two methods of access is that with IMAP, all your mail
remains on the server and you can therfore read it from wherever you happen
to be.With POP, you will only see new mail and your messages are downloaded
to the PC on which you are working and will be removed from the server. There
is a danger with this method that you may end up with mail scattered over several
PCs. You can read a more detailed comparison of the two methods here.
To use POP access:
- set the name of your mail server to pop.stu.qmul.ac.uk
- set the username to be the full-context username as shown in the box above.
If your mail client asks for your POP account details instead of separate
username and POP server, set it to be full.username@pop.stu.qmw.ac.uk.
So, for example, if your login ID is bt0000 set POP account
to be:
bt0000.bio.ns.ts.qmw@pop.stu.qmul.ac.uk
(NB: do not confuse this with your email address which will be bt0000@qmul.ac.uk)
NOTE
When accessing your mail from off-campus by the POP method described above,
you should be aware of the following:
- You can only access your new mail. Any other folders or saved messages
will not be visible.
- Any mail read in this way will be removed from the server unless you set-up
the mail client to leave messages on the server after reading.
- Any read messages will be downloaded to the PC you are using and be accessible
for subsequent users unless you delete them at the end of your session.
Forwarding Email
If you want to forward your mail to another personal account, such as
a Hotmail account, follow these instructions.
